THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE INTREPID FOX (PART 3) ST GILES CIRCUS
The original Intrepid Fox closed in 2006 and is now a
soulless restaurant. Wardour Street is a shadow of its former self. How
different in 1987 when you had both The Marquee Club and The Fox! At least The
Ship is still there and you can also sit in the Pret A Manger (next to the site
of the original Fox) and remember how it used to be…
Anyway, a few months after the original closed a new
Intrepid Fox sprang up again in the heart of London town. This time at St Giles
Circus behind Tottenham Court Road tube station. It’s a great atmospheric area
and The Fox fits in nicely.
Didn’t pay my first visit to the ‘new’ Fox until 2010, but I’ve
been many times since. I’m pleased to report it’s just as cool as the original.
The rock’n’roll atmosphere drips off the walls and every visit gives a
different perspective and atmosphere.
The bar staff kick ass and it’s still just about the only
place in London you’ll get heckled or refused service if you are wearing a tie.
The 'new' Fox
This place is rock’n’roll mofos – so look and act the part!
Some people moan about this, but in the old pub you wouldn’t even have got in
if you dressed ‘normally’!
On my first visit I think the second song on was ‘Real Wild
Child’ by Iggy Pop and I knew right then I’d found a new home.
In fact I’m back again this Saturday as a warm up before the
Crashdiet gig at Angel.
Sadly the threat of closure or a move hangs over The Fox
once again. Developers have submitted plans to sterilise St Giles Circus and it
will probably go the way of Carnaby Street (which is just awful now). The Fox
has been sold to property developers and they’ve openly announced plans to
demolish if the latest planning application is approved.
BUT – the management of The Fox don’t seem concerned. It
seems that plans could (hopefully) be afoot for yet another incarnation of The
Intrepid Fox if this one closes.
Enjoy The Fox at St Giles Circus while you can and fingers
crossed The Fox will rise from the rubble once again.
